U.P. Energy Task Force meets Oct. 1 in Sault Ste. Marie to discuss energy assistance

The U.P. Energy Task Force’s next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 1 in Sault Ste. Marie and will include presentations and information on customer assistance programs for households that have trouble with their energy costs.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Lake Superior Ballroom, Walker Cisler Student and Conference Center at Lake Superior State University, 650 W. Easterday Ave., Sault Ste. Marie. The focus will be shutoff rules and the type of assistance available (such as bill payment and energy efficiency programs) for propane customers and related issues.

The afternoon portion of the meeting will be a listening session to gather comments from audience members on energy issues in the Upper Peninsula.

Please note: In the event of a partial state government shutdown, Tuesday’s meeting will be canceled and alternate arrangements will be announced at a later date. If Tuesday’s meeting is canceled, comments can still be submitted online at EGLE-UPEnergy@Michigan.gov.

The next regularly scheduled U.P. Energy Task Force meeting is from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba.

All public comments will help the U.P. Energy Task Force to complete its work as outlined in Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Executive Order, which outlines these responsibilities:

  • Assess the U.P.’s overall energy needs and how they are being met.
  • Formulate alternative solutions for meeting the U.P.’s energy needs, with a focus on security, reliability, affordability, and environmental soundness. This includes, but is not limited to, alternative means to supply the energy sources used by U.P. residents, and alternatives to those energy sources.
  • Identify and evaluate potential changes that could occur to energy supply and distribution in the U.P.; the economic, environmental, and other impacts of such changes; and alternatives for meeting the U.P.’s energy needs due to such changes.

The U.P. Energy Task Force must complete its final report in two stages. It must submit a propane plan to the governor by March 31, focused on alternative means to supply propane to the U.P. Then, by March 31, 2021, it is required to submit the remainder of its report.
