November 11-17, 2017: Elevator Escalator Safety Awareness Week
WHEREAS, according to the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation, it is estimated that more than 575 million people throughout the United States ride elevators, escalators and moving sidewalks every day. In Michigan, there are nearly 27,000 elevators and escalators throughout the state; and,
WHEREAS, children and adults over 65 are considered the most at risk of elevator and escalator injury due to falls and other accidents; and,
WHEREAS, elevator riders should always enter and exit carefully, ensuring clothes and any carry-ons remain away from the door opening. Escalator passengers should not ride with strollers, luggage or carts of any type; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we join with Michigan's Bureau of Construction Codes within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation to increase elevator and escalator safety awareness in our state. We encourage all Michigan residents to learn more about the safe and proper use of elevators, escalators and moving walkways;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 11-17, 2011 as Elevator Escalator Safety Awareness Week in Michigan.
