January 16, 2018: Foster Grandparent Volunteer Day

WHEREAS, older adults are rethinking retirement through volunteerism; and,

WHEREAS, nearly 24 percent of older adults volunteered last year, more than any other group; and,

WHEREAS, we must retain the talents and skills of the older adults who help communities in a variety of ways; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan’s 16 foster grandparent programs provide low-income adults ages 55 and older challenging and meaningful volunteer opportunities in 56 counties throughout the state; and,

WHEREAS, in Michigan 1,028 Foster Grandparent volunteers contributed more than 1,073,232 hours of service to over 5,493 children with special or unique needs, helping them overcome various educational and life skill challenges; and,

WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Aging and Adult Services Agency  to raise awareness of Michigan’s Foster Grandparent programs and to recognize the outstanding service of the Foster Grandparent volunteers currently serving throughout the state, providing a positive impact. Their nurturing, mentoring and overall efforts have contributed greatly to the lives of many children and have helped strengthen our communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim January 16, 2018 as Foster Grandparent Volunteer Day in Michigan.
