April 8-15, 2018: Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week
WHEREAS, over 50,000 American citizens are diagnosed every year with cancer of the head and neck region (excluding thyroid); and,
WHEREAS, 60 percent of all head and neck cancer patients will live less than 5 years following their diagnosis; and,
WHEREAS, a large percentage of all oral, head and neck cancers can be prevented and only a small percentage of the people of the United States understand the disease, its causes, its treatments, and its prevention; and,
WHEREAS, a significant number of individuals treated for this disease encounter disability due to breathing, swallowing and speaking as well as physical and visual difficulties; and,
WHEREAS, increased awareness of this disease process could result in earlier diagnosis, lower functional disability and higher survival rates;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 8-15, 2018 as Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week in Michigan.
