August 2018: Gastroparesis Awareness Month

WHEREAS, gastroparesis is a chronic illness that affects more than 5 million people in the United States of America; and,

WHEREAS, gastroparesis is a “paralysis of the stomach” which causes sometimes debilitating pain, nausea, vomiting, early satiety, and can lead to serious complications such as malnourishment, dehydration, extreme weight loss, and overwhelming fatigue; and,

WHEREAS, no known cure, and few effective treatment options or medications for gastroparesis exist; and,

WHEREAS, people with gastroparesis would benefit from more research, improved medications, additional treatment options, better support, and hope for the future; and,

WHEREAS, awareness regarding the devastating effects of this disorder is for the good of the public health;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 2018 as Gastroparesis Awareness Month in Michigan.
