March 2011: Reading Month

WHEREAS, it is during the month of March that we make it a point to celebrate and recognize the importance of reading, a skill and hobby that is enjoyed by people of all ages and all walks of life; and,

WHEREAS, reading to children in the early years of their lives stimulates their social and intellectual development, and reinforces the importance of reading and learning for success; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan's future depends on a workforce with strong literacy skills; the ability to read is vital and children should practice and improve this skill throughout their education. and,

WHEREAS, last year, the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) showed that statewide student reading scores are on the rise. This promising development should encourage parents and educators to continue supporting Michigan's children in their reading goals;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 2011 as Reading Month in Michigan.
