March 2011: Peace Corps Month

WHEREAS, the Peace Corps has become an enduring symbol of our nation's commitment to encouraging progress, creating opportunity and expanding development at the grassroots level in developing countries; and,

WHEREAS, more than 200,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps volunteers in 139 countries since 1961. Over the years, 6,500 Michigan men and women have responded to our nation's call to serve by joining the Peace Corps; and,

WHEREAS, the Peace Corps has strengthened the ties of friendship and understanding between the people of the United States and those of other nations; and,

WHEREAS, the Peace Corps has made significant and lasting contributions around the world in agriculture, business development, information technology, education, health and the environment, improving the overall lives of the individuals and communities that they reach; and,

WHEREAS, it is more than fitting to recognize the achievements of the Peace Corps and its volunteers, past and present, reaffirming our country's commitment to service, peace, and truly making a difference in the lives of others;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 2011 as Peace Corps Month in Michigan.
