March 17, 2011 as Michigan Agriculture Day

WHEREAS, it is during the month of March that we nationally recognize the importance of agriculture in the United States, the source of virtually everything we eat each day; and,

WHEREAS, contributing $71.3 billion to our state's economy each year, agriculture plays a key role in the growth and reinvention of Michigan's economy; between 2006 and 2007, Michigan's agricultural economy increased at a rate of more than five times faster than the rate of the general economy; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan's agriculture industry and related businesses employ approximately one million people; our great state is home to a diverse network of family farmers, processors, wholesalers, retailers and consumers that make it a priority to provide safe and nutritious food to millions in our state and country; and,

WHEREAS, on this day, we celebrate Michigan's rich and abundant agriculture industry and we thank those who maintain and support it; let us recognize agriculture as a cornerstone for Michigan's economic progress;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 17, 2011 as Michigan Agriculture Day.
