April 2011: Child Abuse Prevention Month

Date:  April 01, 2011  -  April 30, 2011
Time: All Day Event
WHEREAS, it is estimated that more than 1,700 children die each year from child abuse and neglect in our nation, and in Michigan, 32,335 children experienced child abuse or neglect in 2010; and,

WHEREAS, with scientific studies now linking abuse and neglect of children to a wide range of medical, emotional, psychological and behavioral disorders, child abuse is considered one of the most serious public health issues in our nation and state; and,

WHEREAS, parental drug and alcohol abuse, unemployment, poverty, stress and social isolation are known risk factors for child maltreatment, but preventative factors like promoting family resiliency and knowledge of parenting and child development are keys to protecting and strengthening families; and,

WHEREAS, expenses associated with child abuse and neglect cost our nation an estimated $108.3 billion annually; putting these dollars toward child abuse prevention programs instead would ultimately cut costs, saving money and lives;

WHEREAS, child abuse prevention is a community responsibility and it is during this month that we recognize the importance of child abuse prevention, and we join with the Michigan Department of Human Services and the Children's Trust Fund to promote The Power of One, an initiative led by the Children's Trust Fund that asserts one community, one person, one dollar or one action can help protect Michigan's children from abuse and neglect;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2011 as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Michigan.
