April 2011: Sexual Assault Awareness Month

WHEREAS, it is estimated that someone is raped in the United States every two and a half minutes, and in 2009, almost 11,000 sex offenses were reported to law enforcement in Michigan; and, 

WHEREAS, sexual assault is defined as illegal sexual contact that involves force upon a person without consent, or is inflicted upon a person who is incapable of giving consent; and, 

WHEREAS, sexual assault is an atrocious, intolerable and violent crime that causes extensive short and long-term implications for victims and their loved ones; and, 

WHEREAS, through advocacy, legislation and services, Michigan is committed to reducing and eliminating incidences of sexual assault and violence in our state; and,   

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence encouraging citizens to learn about sexual assault and violence, how best to prevent it and the services and assistance available to sexual assault survivors; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2011 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Michigan.
