April 2011: Blindness Prevention and Services Month

WHEREAS, more than 25 million Americans report experiencing significant vision loss, and approximately 45,000 Michigan citizens are considered legally blind; and, 

WHEREAS, blindness may occur suddenly or over a period of time, and the leading causes for blindness in the United States include diabetes, glaucoma and macular degeneration; and,   

WHEREAS, eye doctors and agencies throughout Michigan provide support groups and programs that educate communities about vision loss and blindness prevention, and offer services to help visually impaired and blind individuals to live independently and productively; and,  

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Commission for the Blind and other groups committed to ensuring the long-term vision health for the people of Michigan, and we encourage citizens to have routine eye examinations which are vital for early diagnosis and treatment to prevent vision loss and blindness; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2011 as Blindness Prevention and Services Month in Michigan.
