WHEREAS, clean air is essential to the quality of life for Michigan citizens, but also plays a vital role in protecting and improving the beautiful natural environment of our state; and,
WHEREAS, emissions from mobile sources, such as cars and trucks, account for much of the air pollution in our nation, and exposure to these emissions and other hazardous and toxic pollutants often contribute to short- and long-term health problems; and,
WHEREAS, from properly disposing of household paints, solvents and pesticides to walking or riding a bicycle to work when possible, every Michigan citizen can take part in helping to improve the overall air quality of our state; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to raise awareness of the vital importance of air quality in Michigan, and to encourage citizens of all ages to learn more about how they can take action for creating a healthier environment today, and for Michigan's future generations;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2 through May 6, 2011 as Air Quality Awareness Week in Michigan.
