May 2011: Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

WHEREAS, the safe operation of a motorcycle requires training, use of good judgment and thorough knowledge of traffic laws and licensing requirements; and,

WHEREAS, though motorcycles represent only 3.25 percent of all registered vehicles in Michigan, 11.8 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities occur as a result of motorcycle use; and,

WHEREAS, with more than 555,000 licensed motorcycle operators in Michigan, motorcycle safety education and training is extremely vital in our state; and, 

WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of all motorcycle operators to ensure the use of proper protective riding apparel and a safety helmet that meets the standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of State to raise awareness of motorcycle operator education training and programs, and to encourage all Michigan drivers to drive defensively and cautiously in order to reduce motor vehicle collisions and save lives;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2011 as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Michigan.
