WHEREAS, according to the National Fire Reporting System, an estimated 2,495 fires were intentionally set in Michigan in 2010, resulting in nine deaths, more than 70 injuries and $30,617,239 in losses; and,
WHEREAS, arson is a serious crime that embodies devastation and destruction, causing severe damage to buildings and neighborhoods, and endangers the lives of innocent people; and,
WHEREAS, each year, arson costs Michigan taxpayers millions of dollars and according to the U.S. Fire Administration, arson costs our nation an estimated one billion dollars in direct property losses each year; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Bureau of Fire Services and the Michigan Arson Prevention Committee to encourage Michigan citizens to recognize the costly consequences of arson, and to work together to prevent arson in their neighborhoods and communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 1 through May 7, 2011 as Arson Awareness Week in Michigan.
