May 1 through May 8, 2011: Holocaust Remembrance Week

WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the systematic and state sponsored persecution and brutal murder of more than six million European Jews and other ethnic, racial and ideological groups by Nazi Germany between the years of 1933 and 1945; and,

WHEREAS, Nazis believed that they were racially superior to the Jews and by 1945, Nazi Germans and their collaborators killed two out of every three Jews in their effort to exterminate the Jewish people; and,

WHEREAS, this era in the history of mankind will never be forgotten, and this week offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities we hold as individuals, societies and governments to prevent genocide like the Holocaust; and,

WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the United States Holocaust Memorial Council to remember the victims and the families forever changed by the Holocaust; we honor Holocaust survivors, those who risked their lives as liberators and together, we renew our vigilance against hatred and persecution;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 1 through May 8, 2011 as Holocaust Remembrance Week in Michigan.
