WHEREAS, social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences to help prepare youth to become responsible citizens in society; and,
WHEREAS, a vital part of Michigan's curriculum, social studies builds disciplinary knowledge, thinking skills and reiterates the importance of citizen participation for students; and,
WHEREAS, groups including the Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan Council for the Social Studies, and events like the Michigan Social Studies Olympiad are dedicated to increasing student and teacher interest in social studies education, and work to provide opportunities for social studies development and participatory activities for students; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we recognize the importance of social studies and history in Michigan's education system, and we encourage all Michigan students, parents and teachers to actively participate in social studies education;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Saturday, May 7, 2011 as Social Studies Day in Michigan.
