WHEREAS, home to the Great Lakes and thousands of inland lakes, Michigan's waters serve as our state's most significant resource, and water safety and drowning prevention education is imperative for the citizens of Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, drowning is the number two leading cause of accidental death for children age 14 and under in our nation, and approximately 3,600 children go to the emergency room after near-drowning incidents each year; and,
WHEREAS, during the summer of 2010, more than 20 drowning deaths occurred in the Great Lakes, claiming the lives of children and adults; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, we encourage and remind parents to always watch young children playing in or near any body of water, including bathtubs, pools and lakes, and we urge all Michigan citizens to recognize the vital importance of water safety and drowning prevention education;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2011 as Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Month in Michigan.
