WHEREAS, Michigan's elders and vulnerable adults are valued members of our community who deserve to live with respect and dignity; though severely underreported and unfortunate, it is widely recognized that elders and vulnerable adults are at risk of harm from abuse, neglect and exploitation; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is home to approximately 1.8 million citizens older than age 60 and an estimated 10 percent are abused, neglected or exploited each year; and,
WHEREAS, in 2010, nearly 19,000 cases of suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation were reported to the Michigan Department of Human Services' Adult Protective Services program; and,
WHEREAS, the Michigan Department of Human Services and the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging are committed to protecting these citizens from harm, and on this day and during this week, we raise awareness of elder and vulnerable adult abuse in Michigan; we encourage citizens to learn about the signs of this abuse in an effort to protect those in need and to decrease abuse occurrences in our state;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Wednesday, June 15, 2011 and the week of June 13, 2011 as Elder and Vulnerable Adult Abuse Awareness Day and Week in Michigan.
