Saturday, June 18, 2011: Destroyer Escort Day

WHEREAS, destroyer escorts were a special classification of smaller and lightly armed warships designed to accompany convoys of United States Merchant Marine ships during World War II; and, 

    

WHEREAS, today, destroyer escorts are remembered as some of the most versatile and useful ships in warship history; and,

 

WHEREAS, sailors serving on destroyer escorts were entrusted to protect supplies and troop transport ships, willingly risking their lives to defend the United States from enemy ships; and,

 

WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Chapter of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association to honor the shipmates who bravely served our nation aboard destroyer escorts during World War II;

  

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Saturday, June 18, 2011 as Destroyer Escort Day in Michigan.
