WHEREAS, established in 1939, June as National Dairy Month continues to offer citizens an opportunity to recognize the important health benefits and valuable nutrients provided by milk and other dairy products; and,
WHEREAS, dairy is the largest sector of Michigan's agricultural industry and contributes nearly $6 billion to the state's economy each year; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan dairy herds produce approximately 8.3 billion pounds of milk each year, making our state 8th in the nation for annual milk production; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to remind Michigan citizens of the importance of dairy in our diet, and we encourage daily consumption of three servings of milk or other dairy products as this greatly helps to reduce risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure and colon cancer;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Wednesday, June 22, 2011 as Michigan Dairy Day.
