Friday, July 29, 2011: Muscular Dystrophy and "Firefighters Fill the Boot" Awareness WeekendDate: July 29, 2011

WHEREAS, Muscular Dystrophy, commonly known as MD, refers to a group of hereditary muscle diseases that are typically multi-system disorders, and characterized by progressive muscle weakness; and,
WHEREAS, symptoms of MD include poor balance, drooping eyelids, frequent falls, difficulty walking and respiratory complications; and,
WHEREAS, with no known cure for MD, firefighters in Michigan and across the nation have partnered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) for nearly 60 years to raise funds for the fight against MD and neuromuscular diseases; and,
WHEREAS, in the past ten years alone, members of the Michigan Professional Firefighters Union have raised more than $2.75 million to help support the MDA; and,
WHEREAS, during this weekend, we raise awareness of MD in Michigan and we recognize the efforts of the many firefighters working to "fill the boot" for a cause;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the weekend of Friday, July 29, 2011 as Muscular Dystrophy and "Firefighters Fill the Boot" Awareness Weekend in Michigan.
