August 2011: Michigan Breastfeeding Awareness MonthDate: August 01, 2011 - August 31, 2011

WHEREAS, Michigan is committed to ensuring the long-term health of the mothers, infants and children in our state; and,
WHEREAS, breastfeeding is the most natural and healthiest diet a mother can provide her infant, and additionally benefits the mother as it helps to prevent breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis; and,
WHEREAS, breast milk provides a perfectly balanced diet and naturally builds a stronger immune system for infants, preventing various potential infections and illnesses; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Community Health to raise awareness of the importance of breastfeeding in Michigan, and we thank the clinicians, health care leaders, employers, policymakers and community members for their active support of breastfeeding mothers in our state;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 2011 as Michigan Breastfeeding Awareness Month.
