August 7 through August 13, 2011: Michigan Farmers Market Week

WHEREAS, Michigan's food and agriculture industry is the state's second largest economic driver, contributing more than $71 billion to Michigan's economy each year and employing approximately one million citizens; and,


WHEREAS, Michigan farmers harvest an abundance of high quality agricultural products that can be found at the more than 250 farmers markets across the state; and,


WHEREAS, in 2010, Michigan ranked fourth in the nation for the number of farmers markets according to the United States Department of Agriculture; and,


WHEREAS, farmers markets offer fresh and robust foods, and with each local food purchase, citizens are directly contributing to Michigan farmers who help generate revenue for local, county and state taxes and employ local labor within their communities; and,


WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to celebrate Michigan's farmers markets and to encourage citizens to shop at their local farmers market;


NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Sunday, August 7 through Saturday, August 13, 2011 as Michigan Farmers Market Week.
