August 2011: Michigan Motorsports Month

WHEREAS, on February 21, 1948, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) was formed, and just a few years later, the first Cup Race in Michigan took place at the Grand River Speedrome in Grand Rapids on July 1, 1951; and,

 

WHEREAS, today, motorsports remain a major contributor to Michigan's sports and tourism industry as the Michigan International Speedway earns nearly $300 million each year, and welcomes thousands of spectators from across Michigan, the United States and more than a dozen countries; and,  

 

WHEREAS, in addition to the Michigan International Speedway, seven other Michigan tracks have held events for several national touring series of NASCAR, as well as the former NASCAR Convertible and Grand National East divisions; and,

   

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan International Speedway to encourage Michigan citizens and visitors alike to enjoy one of the spectacular, Pure Michigan racing events in our great state;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 2011 as Michigan Motorsports Month.
