September 2011: Preparedness Month

WHEREAS, as we approach the 10th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, we reflect on the thousands of lives lost, and we stress the importance of emergency preparedness in order to reduce injury and loss of life in hazardous circumstances; and,


WHEREAS, being prepared includes staying informed about potential hazards that could affect the community, developing an emergency plan that includes places to go and who to contact during an emergency and creating an emergency supply kit containing items that will help individuals and their families survive for at least three days in the event of an emergency; and,


WHEREAS, the Michigan State Police, as well as various community agencies including the Michigan Citizen Corps Program, are committed to helping citizens and communities prepare before an emergency strikes; and,


WHEREAS, during this month and throughout the year, we join with numerous agencies, non-profit organizations and businesses to promote the importance of emergency preparedness to every individual, family and community in Michigan;


NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 2011 as Preparedness Month in Michigan.
