WHEREAS, Michigan is home to 238 public-use airports, 80 flight schools, 225 aircraft dealers, approximately 7,000 registered aircrafts and nearly 19,000 pilots; and,
WHEREAS, aviation-related activities contribute approximately $20 billion to Michigan's economy annually, having significant economic impact in local communities throughout the state; the annual Michigan Air Tour is an opportunity to recognize Michigan's airports, aviation infrastructure and commitment to aviation safety; and,
WHEREAS, the first Michigan Air Tour took place in 1929 when 42 pilots flew to 32 cities across the state, beginning at the Pontiac Airport, which is known today as the Oakland County International Airport; and,
WHEREAS, during this weekend, we celebrate Michigan's aviation history and recognize the important economic role aeronautics play in our state; we encourage Michigan citizens to learn more about the Michigan Air Tour and to visit one of the events planned for this spectacular weekend;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the weekend of September 9, 2011 as the Michigan Air Tour Weekend.
