WHEREAS, telephones play a critical role during emergencies and remain a vital link to government services, community resources, friends and family, yet many individuals and families in our state are unable to afford the cost of a home telephone; and,
WHEREAS, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Michigan Public Service Commission have joined efforts to offer the Link-Up and Lifeline Assistance programs, both supported by the Universal Service Fund, which make telephone service more affordable for Michigan's low-income consumers by providing a discount on the installation fee and monthly charges for local telephone service; and,
WHEREAS, additionally, the FCC established enhanced Link-Up and Lifeline programs for tribal lands; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Public Service Commission to raise awareness of the Michigan Link-Up and Lifeline programs to citizens across the state, and we encourage all eligible customers to take the steps to signing up; for more information, citizens may call the Michigan Public Service Commission at 1-800-292-9555;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Monday, September 12 through Saturday, September 17, 2011 as Michigan Lifeline Awareness Week.
