September 2011: Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma Awareness Month

WHEREAS, hematologic cancers, also known as blood cancers, currently afflict nearly 960,000 people in the United States, with an estimated 137,000 new cases diagnosed each year; and,

 

WHEREAS, blood related cancers include leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and these cancers attack people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds; and,

 

WHEREAS, among teens and children less than 20 years old, leukemia is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death; and,

  

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) to raise awareness of these blood related cancers in Michigan and to encourage citizens to learn more about these diseases in order to improve early detection and treatment; we encourage support for the education and research programs working to find cures;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 2011 as Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma Awareness Month in Michigan.
