WHEREAS, in the last decade, murder has extinguished the hopes and dreams of more than 113,000 citizens in the United States, and for each homicide, there are mothers, fathers, children, brothers, sisters and friends whose lives are forever changed by the tragedy of losing a loved one; and,
WHEREAS, various support groups and organizations, including the National Center for Victims of Crime, provide support, guidance and counseling for individuals and families touched by homicide; and,
WHEREAS, a National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims has been recognized since 2007, and this year, the U.S. Department of Justice's Office for Victims of Crime will support a special memorial event at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we encourage every citizen in Michigan to honor the memories of those who lost their lives due to acts of violence, and to recognize the impact of homicide on surviving family members, loved ones and friends;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Sunday, September 25, 2011 as a Day of Remembrance for Murdered Victims in Michigan.
