October 2011: Cyber Security Awareness Month

WHEREAS, technology plays a vital role in our daily lives and in the future of our nation; the internet is frequently used within homes, schools, libraries, businesses and other organizations for a variety of tasks including performing research, conducting business, enhancing education and keeping in touch with family and friends; and,

WHEREAS, critical sectors increasingly rely on information systems to support financial services, energy, telecommunications, transportation, utilities, health care and emergency response systems; and,
  
WHEREAS,
maintaining the security of our cyber networks, infrastructure and economy is of utmost importance and the growing number of calculated attacks on this security is a serious threat to our nation; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and other information technology organizations and agencies to raise awareness of the importance of cyber security in Michigan and throughout the United States; we encourage citizens to learn more about the steps they can take to ensure safety and security online;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 2011 as Cyber Security Awareness Month in Michigan.
