WHEREAS, it is estimated that insurance fraud costs Michigan citizens $3 billion each year, and the average Michigan family pays $400 to $700 in additional premiums annually as a result; and,
WHEREAS, insurance fraud is one of the most costly white-collar crimes in America, ranking second to tax evasion; in Michigan, insurance fraud is a felony and it is estimated that 10 percent of all property/casualty insurance claims in Michigan are fraudulent; and,
WHEREAS, when insurance fraud occurs, Michigan residents pay through higher insurance rates, increased taxes and inflated prices for goods and services; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we raise awareness of insurance fraud in Michigan, and we join with numerous agencies and organizations throughout the state, including the Insurance Institute of Michigan and the Michigan Arson Prevention Committee, that are committed to educating Michigan residents and combating the crime of insurance fraud;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Sunday, October 9 through Saturday, October 15, 2011 as Insurance Fraud Awareness Week in Michigan.
