WHEREAS, last year, home fires killed more than 40 Michigan citizens, and according to the National Fire Incident Reporting System, fire departments throughout the state responded to nearly 16,000 home fires in 2010; and,
WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern and the home is where people are at greatest risk from fire; cooking equipment, heating and electrical equipment and smoking materials are among the leading causes of all reported home fires; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan's first responders are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our state, and they continue efforts to reduce the occurrence of home fires through prevention and protection education; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we raise awareness of fire prevention throughout the state of Michigan; we encourage individuals and families to ensure homes are equipped with working smoke alarms or automatic fire sprinkler systems, and to have a practiced home fire escape plan for additional preparedness;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Sunday, October 9 through Saturday, October 15, 2011 as Fire Prevention Week in Michigan.
