October 9 through October 15, 2011: Michigan Earth Science Week

WHEREAS, the study of Earth's atmosphere, hydrosphere, waters and biosphere, as well as the solid earth, comprise the meaning of Earth science; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan is home to some of the world's most magnificent and abundant natural resources, and Earth sciences play a vital role in our state's health, safety and economic well-being; and,
  
WHEREAS, for more than a decade, the American Geological Institute has organized this national recognition week to help citizens gain a better understanding and appreciation of Earth sciences; and,

WHEREAS, during this week, we encourage citizens of all ages to learn more about Earth sciences, and to become more aware of steps they can take to preserve and maintain Earth's natural environment; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Sunday, October 9 through Saturday, October 15, 2011 as Michigan Earth Science Week.
