WHEREAS, respiratory care is a health care specialty which provides a wide range of therapeutic and diagnostic services to patients with heart and lung disorders; and,
WHEREAS, respiratory therapists evaluate and monitor heart and lung functions as well as provide treatments for patients including the administration of oxygen and management of mechanical ventilators; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to their associate or bachelor's degree, respiratory therapists can learn additional specializations including respiratory care for neonatal, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we recognize the respiratory therapists and other respiratory health care professionals serving throughout Michigan and the United States; we encourage people of all ages to learn more about career opportunities in the respiratory care field, and we raise awareness of the importance of heart and lung health for all Michigan citizens;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Monday, October 24 through Sunday, October 30, 2011 as Michigan Respiratory Care Week.
