April 2012: Donate Life Month

WHEREAS, in 2011, 270 organ donors and 887 tissue donors helped save the lives of hundreds of people through organ transplants, and improved the lives of thousands others through tissue surgeries; and,

WHEREAS, it is apparent that Michigan is home to some of the most selfless individuals, yet the need for organ donors remains great in our state; and,

WHEREAS, on average, four Michigan citizens die each week because an organ is not readily available for transplant, and today, nearly 3,000 people in Michigan are waiting for their opportunity to receive an organ transplant; and,

WHEREAS, giving life to someone facing blindness or imminent death through organ, tissue and eye donation is truly an act of generosity, kindness and love that we, the people of Michigan, have the ability to give; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we recognize the importance of organ, tissue and eye donations, and we raise awareness of the Michigan Organ Donor Registry, encouraging Michigan citizens to help save lives by enrolling;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2012 as Donate Life Month in Michigan.
