April 2012: Safe Digging Month

WHEREAS, every year, thousands of gas pipeline leaks occur when individuals or companies fail to follow safe digging processes, sometimes with tragic consequences; and,


WHEREAS, led by the Common Ground Alliance, "Call Before You Dig" is a national campaign   that encourages individuals or companies considering any type of digging project to call 811 for assistance before they begin; and,


WHEREAS, this federally mandated, national number was created to help protect citizens from unintentionally hitting underground utility lines while working on digging projects that range from planting a tree to building a deck; and,


WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the U.S. and Michigan Departments of Transportation and the Common Ground Alliance to raise awareness of the importance of pipeline safety education; in the effort to prevent pipeline accidents, we remind all Michigan citizens to call 811 before they begin any digging project; 


NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2012 as Safe Digging Month in Michigan.
