May 7 through May 11, 2012: Senior Corps Week

WHEREAS, for more than four decades, Senior Corps and its three programs, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Senior Companion Program and Foster Grandparent Program, have proven to be highly effective ways to engage citizens age 55 and older in meeting community, state and national needs; and,


WHEREAS, each year, Senior Corps provides opportunities for nearly 330,000 senior Americans throughout the nation, including about 8,900 in the great state of Michigan, to serve their communities; and,


WHEREAS, last year, Senior Corps volunteers provided more than 96.2 million hours of service, strengthening our educational system, protecting and preserving our environment, providing independent living services and helping to improve the lives of some of our most vulnerable citizens; and,


WHEREAS, during this week, we recognize the many contributions and positive impacts of Senior Corps volunteers; we encourage citizens throughout the state to thank Michigan's Senior Corps volunteers for their commitment, dedication and service to their communities;


NOW THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Monday, May 7 through Friday, May 11, 2012 as Senior Corps Week in Michigan.
