Saturday, June 16, 2012: Destroyer Escort DayWHEREAS, destroyer escorts were a special classification of smaller and lightly armed warships designed to accompany convoys of United States Merchant Marine ships during World War II; and,
WHEREAS, today, destroyer escorts are remembered as some of the most versatile and useful ships in warship history; and,
WHEREAS, sailors serving on destroyer escorts were entrusted to protect supplies and troop transport ships, willingly risking their lives to defend the United States from enemy ships; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Chapter of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association to honor and remember the shipmates who bravely served our nation aboard destroyer escorts during World War II;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Saturday, June 16, 2012 as Destroyer Escort Day in Michigan.
