August 2012: Michigan Breastfeeding Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Michigan is committed to ensuring the long-term health of the mothers, infants and children in our state; and, 


WHEREAS, breast milk contains immune factors that protect children against the risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), infection and illnesses and childhood obesity; additionally, mothers who breastfeed have lower rates of breast cancer and ovarian cancer; and,


WHEREAS, given the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of Michigan's mothers, infants and children, it is critical that we take action to improve rates of breastfeeding initiation and duration; and,


WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Community Health to raise awareness of the importance of breastfeeding; we thank the clinicians, health care leaders, employers, policymakers and community members for their continued support of breastfeeding mothers in our state;


NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 2012 as Michigan Breastfeeding Awareness Month.
