September 2 through September 8, 2012: Lifelong Learning Week

WHEREAS, lifelong learning is the voluntary, self-motivated process of keeping one's mind and body engaged by actively pursuing knowledge and experience at any age; and,

 

WHEREAS, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly 50 percent of adults throughout the nation are enrolled in some form of lifelong learning; and,

   

WHEREAS, scientific research demonstrates that participation in lifelong learning activities positively influences mental and physical activity for older adults, which in turn results in improved health and well-being; and,

 

WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the University of Michigan's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute to express appreciation and gratitude to the many groups and volunteers who support lifelong learning opportunities in the Great Lakes State; we encourage citizens of all ages to learn more about the benefits of lifelong learning; 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Sunday, September 2 through Saturday, September 8, 2012 as Lifelong Learning Week in Michigan.
