September 2012: Hunger Action Month

WHEREAS, hunger and poverty remain issues of grave concern in communities throughout our state and nation; and,

 

WHEREAS, every day, nearly 49 million people in America face hunger; and,

 

WHEREAS, in Michigan, more than 1 million citizens rely on food provided by food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other community organizations each year; more than half of these individuals are children and seniors; and,

    

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Food Bank Council of Michigan to raise awareness of the importance of combating hunger and poverty in the Great Lakes State; we recognize the countless individuals serving in food banks and other community organizations, and we encourage residents to learn more about how they can help support and serve Michigan citizens in need;  

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 2012 as Hunger Action Month in Michigan.
