September 9 through September 15, 2012: Suicide Prevention Week

WHEREAS, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in America, and ranks third as a cause of death among youth ages 15-24; and,


WHEREAS, each year in Michigan, more than 1,100 citizens end their lives, with thousands more attempting suicide; the suicide rate for elderly adults is nearly 50 percent higher than that of the nation as a whole; and,


WHEREAS, suicide is a tragic and devastating event for families and communities, and studies show that education and awareness efforts against suicide save lives; and,  


WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Association for Suicide Prevention and many other organizations, agencies, groups and individuals throughout the Great Lakes State to raise awareness of the extreme importance of suicide awareness and prevention; we encourage continued support of suicide prevention initiatives and urge citizens of all ages to learn about the warning signs of suicide;


NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Sunday, September 9 through Saturday, September 15, 2012 as Suicide Prevention Week in Michigan.
