Saturday, October 6, 2012: Hero Dog Day

WHEREAS, in recent years, our nation has suffered a string of unrelenting tornadoes, violent hurricanes and devastating wildfires; through all this, search and rescue dogs, alongside first-responders and search teams, combed through rubble in search of human survivors, just as they did following the tragedy of 9/11; and,

WHEREAS, not only do these hero dogs serve in emergency situations, daily, they can be found with police patrolling airports and train depots, or sniffing for bombs and other hazardous materials in post offices; and,

WHEREAS, the American Humane Association and Cesar Canine Cuisine will again host the Hero Dog Awards to celebrate the law enforcement and arson dogs, service dogs, therapy dogs, military dogs, guide dogs, search and rescue dogs and hearing dogs who enrich, enhance and even save our lives; and,

WHEREAS, on this day, we honor all hero dogs helping to sustain the protection and safety of citizens in the Great Lakes State and throughout the United States;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Saturday, October 6, 2012 as Hero Dog Day in Michigan.
