May 11, 2016: Older Michiganders Day
WHEREAS, 2 million older adults aged 60 years and older reside in the state of Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, older Michiganders are active contributors to their communities as engaged residents, friends, neighbors and volunteers; and,
WHEREAS, the state of Michigan has a long history of providing quality services that help older adults maintain their independence and live in the setting of their choice as they age; and,
WHEREAS, elder abuse prevention, affordable long-term supports and services, and support for caregivers remain important policy issues in 2016 facing Michigan’s older adults and their families; and,
WHEREAS, an annual events takes place at the Capitol in Lansing that affords an opportunity for hundreds of older adults to speak with a unified voice to state legislators and key state officials on policy issues important to them; and,
WHEREAS, the contributions, accomplishments and advocacy of older adults are recognized, valued and celebrated at this event;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 11, 2016 as Older Michiganders Day in Michigan.
