September 2016: Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the number one cancer among men and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, approximately 180,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year and over 26,000 will die from it; and,
WHEREAS, prostate cancer not only affects the men diagnosed, but their family and friends as well; and,
WHEREAS, prostate cancer is most often treatable if detected soon, but early stage prostate cancer usually has little to no symptoms; and,
WHEREAS, men who are educated about the value of early detection of prostate cancer are more likely to have the cancer detected when it is treatable; and,
WHEREAS, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month encourages men to discuss prostate cancer with their healthcare provider to ensure early detection;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 2016 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Michigan.
