August 2017: Breastfeeding Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Michigan has made the reduction of infant mortality and the improvement of the overall health status of women and children a priority; and,

WHEREAS, breastfeeding is a proven prevention strategy for protecting both infants and mothers from illness and chronic disease, and to building a foundation for life-long health and wellness; and,

WHEREAS, healthcare providers, hospitals, health insurance providers, work sites, and communities can provide support and education that make it easier for mothers to initiate and sustain breastfeeding; and,

WHEREAS, the benefits of breastfeeding and the risks of not breastfeeding are substantial, it is important for hospitals, businesses, community agencies, and coalitions to work together to provide consistent and accurate information to help ensure successful breastfeeding; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the Michigan Breastfeeding Network and community breastfeeding coalitions to educate Michigan residents on the importance of early breastfeeding education, community and family support, and the positive impact breastfeeding has on childhood and maternal health outcomes;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 2017 as Breastfeeding Awareness Month in Michigan.
