October 24-31, 2017: Michigan Bat Week

WHEREAS, bats provide important ecological services that contribute substantially to the economy of the United States. They protect American forests and agriculture from crop-damaging insects and pests and provide the fundamental benefit of pollination; and,

WHEREAS, recent bat population losses from White-Nose Syndrome and other factors require attention to ensure the sustainability of our food production systems and the protection of environmental and human health; and,

WHEREAS, it is important to continue bat preserving efforts, including increasing citizen engagement to promote the health of bat populations, increasing the quality and quantity of bat roosts and habitats as well as helping restore bat populations to healthy levels;

NOW THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 24-31, 2017 as Michigan Bat Week.
