November 1, 2017: MI ABLE Day
WHEREAS, the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) program was created to encourage and assist individuals and families in saving funds for the purpose of supporting individuals with disabilities to maintain health, self-sufficiency and quality of life; and,
WHEREAS, MI Able provides secure funding for qualified disability expenses on behalf of designated beneficiaries with disabilities that will supplement, but not supplant, benefits provided through private insurance, the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, the Medicaid program, the beneficiary’s employment and other sources; and,
WHEREAS, the federal ABLE Act was signed into law in December 2014. The Michigan ABLE (MiABLE) was signed into law in October of 2015, with the Michigan Department of Treasury administering the program; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan was the third state in the nation to implement this act, providing Michiganders with disabilities more financial opportunities that will ultimately help them live more independently;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Brian Calley, acting governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 1, 2017 as MI ABLE Day.
