November 15-21, 2015: Geography Awareness Week

Whereas, Michigan universities remain committed to serving society and the state of Michigan as they provide knowledge and tools students need to become contributors and leaders; and,

Whereas, understanding our world is a vital component to civic engagement, and experiencing geography helps us understand who we are in relation to the places and people around us, and spatial thinking through maps is one of the most critical skills a person can possess; and,

Whereas, Geography programs throughout Michigan consist of faculty, staff and students who work to be better stewards of the environment through understanding the significance of place, space and time and how we affect or are affected by it; and,

Whereas, the Department of Geography at Michigan State University is the only PhD-granting Geography program in the State of Michigan; and,

Whereas, the Department of Geography at Michigan State University investigates geographic issues of special interest and concern within the State of Michigan including: food security in Detroit, rural access to health care, sources and magnitude of coastal sand dunes, uncovering the origins of the state's fertile soils, and the impact of weather and climate on agriculture, as beyond Michigan's borders and around the planet; and

Whereas, the Department of Geography at Michigan State University has been an independent department for sixty years and has the largest department, by number, of faculty in the state and is one of the largest Geography programs in the country; and,

Whereas, Geography Awareness Week hopes to raise awareness and attempts to reverse the trends in schools in order to support better geography education statewide; and,

Whereas, during the week of November 15th, universities and agencies in the State of Michigan will celebrate the contributions of geographers and the discipline of geography;

Now, Therefore, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 15-21, 2015 as Geography Awareness Week and name the Department of Geography at Michigan State University the official site for Geography Awareness Week activities in the State of Michigan.
