May 2018: Workplace Falls Awareness Month

WHEREAS, 46 percent of the workplace fatalities MIOSHA investigated in 2016 and 2017 were due to falls; and,

WHEREAS, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, falls from elevation remain the leading cause of death in the construction industry in both the U.S. and Michigan, with 3,327 fall-related deaths nationwide over the last 10 years; and,

WHEREAS, employers can prevent falls by having an effective safety and health management system in place and following three main steps: planning work activities to ensure the job is done safely, providing the proper protective equipment, and training everyone to use the equipment safely; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and partnering employers and organizations to increase awareness of fall hazards, and encourage all Michigan citizens to learn more about fall protection to stop workplace falls and save lives;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2018 as Workplace Falls Awareness Month in Michigan.
